In September, Pi’s Managing Director Mike Riding gave a presentation at SWIG’s (Sensors in Water Interest Group) Sensing in Water conference and exhibition, at Nottingham Belfry, focusing on the history of automatic coagulation control systems.
Mike spoke to over 150 water industry professionals on the first day of the conference about coagulation control in the UK, with a presentation titled ‘Coagulation Control; Past, Present and Future’.
In particular, Mike addressed the disadvantages of relying on any single parameter control system to treat differing and variable water sources. In addition, Mike warned about the dangers of trying to create algorithms to try to resolve information from multiple measurements into a single control output. Instead he introduced his audience to Pi’s new coagulation control system CoagSense, which allows the utilization of single control parameters selected from multiple inputs depending on the needs of the plant at any one time.
Why You Can’t Rely on Single Parameter Control Systems
Single parameter control systems may work on some sites some of the time, but changes in water conditions, e.g. heavy rain events, may prove too much for the system to work effectively all of the time.
The CoagSense from Pi uses a combination of parameters (pH, turbidity, streaming current, UV) to provide selective single parameter control, meaning the controller could automatically select which control to utilize based on the current trends whilst avoiding the complications and expense of true multi-parameter control.
