Chlorine Analysers for Residual Chlorine Monitoring- Chloribrid®

Electrochemical and Online DPD Hybrid

Free and total residual chlorine measurements are two of the most important measurements in a water treatment facility, without which operators can’t guarantee the safety of the water they’re producing. There are two main technologies used: electrochemical and DPD (online), both available from Pi. Both technologies have advantages and disadvantages. The patented Chloribrid® uses both technologies in a hybrid instrument to effectively negate all the disadvantages of both, leaving a simple instrument with all the advantages of both electrochemical and online DPD technologies.

Simply put, the Chloribrid® uses an electrochemical sensor whenever it can, and then continually checks that it is correct using the DPD every hour. This gives a continuous chlorine measurement which is fast responding, with a self-check every hour or so against a different technology. If the two readings are significantly different, an alarm is generated and the Chloribrid® will continue using whichever technology the user prefers until human intervention is possible.

The Chloribrid® chlorine monitoring range is particularly suited to working in sites where reliability and ease of use are more important, where a single mode of failure is not ideal and where robustness of monitors is essential such as on unmanned and remote sites.

In a start-up situation, Chloribrid® uses online DPD measurements (every 3 minutes) to output the chlorine residual level until such time as the deviation between the online DPD and the electrochemical sensor remains constant. At that time, Chloribid® uses the online DPD reading to calibrate the electrochemical sensor output and the DPD falls back to checking the electrochemical sensor every hour (user set-able).

Extended Maintenance Periods and Long Life DPD Reagent

One of the advantages of an electrochemical sensor over an online DPD colorimeter is that maintenance intervals are longer (6 months to a year v monthly). The reason online DPD monitors need monthly maintenance is that the reagent they use is both used up AND degrades.

With Chloribrid® the advantage of the 6 months maintenance interval on an electrochemical sensor is still there because Pi’s DPD reagent doesn’t get used up in a month (as frequency of measurement goes from every 3 mins to every 60 minutes) and doesn’t degrade because of a new and secret DPD formulation, which has been tested to be stable for over 6 months, even at elevated temperatures (40°c).
