Peracetic Acid Analyser used by Coca Cola in Aseptic Cold Filling Systems

The sterilisation of drinks containers during the manufacturing and packaging process is important for many reasons, with the main one being risk to human health. Aseptic cold filling lines provide conditions for the filling of soft drinks in an extremely clean and low bacteria environment. To maintain these conditions, all parts of the production line that come into contact with the beverage must be sterile. To achieve the desired sterility, after being sprayed with disinfectant, the product containers, caps, etc. are kept in cold stores to slow down the rate at which any bacteria could grow.

Peracetic acid is a common disinfectant used throughout this process, with varying amounts of disinfectant required at each stage. Like all disinfectants, peracetic acid levels must be monitored to ensure compliance with health and safety guidelines. Therefore, most manufacturers opt to monitor and control peracetic acid dosing in real time.

The CRIUS®4.0 PeraSense is a reliable, accurate, and robust peracetic acid controller that enables real-time monitoring and control of peracetic acid. This membraned device uses no chemical reagents, can go up to 6 months between maintenance, and up to 3 months between calibration.

In 2021, the Coca-Cola plant in Wuhan, China, invested in Pi’s CRIUS®4.0 PeraSense to monitor the concentration of peracetic acid being sprayed inside the bottles for disinfection. It also measures the concentration of peracetic acid in bottle cap tanks, where the sterilised bottle lids are held. Both measurements occur in real time. Now, in 2025, Pi has received very positive feedback from the end user, expressing their praise for the PeraSense.

In another beverage factory in Hebei, China, the CRIUS®4.0 PeraSense was also installed for the same application, aseptic cold filling for sterilisation.

The PeraSense has a low cost of ownership as it requires less maintenance and calibration than other peracetic acid monitors on the market. It is also available with an automatic cleaning option to reduce sensor fouling, decreasing the potential manual maintenance required by other sensors. The PeraSense controllers can also be fitted with additional sensors, such as pH and ORP, to create bespoke multi-parameter systems depending on the needs of the application.
