Which UV254 Sensor Requires the Least Maintenance?

UV254 has long been used as a surrogate measurement for organics monitoring in water treatment plants. It is often installed on the plant inlet or post filtration.

A common drawback of many UV254 analysers is the excessive maintenance they require. For example, ribbons cable becomes brittle and break, bulbs need replacing, glass vials stain, and cleaning pumps get clogged by solids.

Pi’s UV254Sense probe is the solution to most of the issues faced when using other UV254 sensors available on the market. It is very simple to use, cost effective, and has solutions to avoid clogged cleaning pumps.

In January 2026, 10 UV254Sense probes were installed across two municipal water treatment works. In July 2026, (6 months after installation), Pi’s engineers carried out a visit to check on the progress of the project. During these 6 months, none of the UV254Sense probes had received any operator intervention at all – no alarms, no calibration, no cleaning, etc. Upon checking the readings, it was clear that none of the sensors had drifted and were still working well. Pi’s engineers simply cleaned the windows of the probes and reinstated them to their original position. They advised that this simple cleaning procedure be carried out every 3-6 months. No other maintenance should be necessary. Pi’s UV254Sense probe has an approximate lifespan of 10 years. This water treatment works is forecasted to save thousands of pounds over the next decade, by avoiding engineer callouts, sensor drift, reagent costs, and much more.
