Why Do Leading Beverage Manufacturers Use Turbidity Analysers to Monitor Water Quality?

Pi has continued to strengthen its presence in the Chinese beverage industry through its partnership with distributor Huzhou IMP, who received another order from Coca-Cola China to supply TurbSense® turbidity sensors. This project reinforces how Pi’s water quality analysers are increasingly recognised and trusted by major beverage producers across China.

Raw water treatment line of the Coca Cola factory in East China

The contract covers the supply of a series of turbidity analysers for a Coca-Cola plant in East China, where they will be used to monitor the clarity of water at key stages of the raw water treatment system. Consistent turbidity measurement is critical in beverage production because it affects filtration performance, product quality and operational stability. Pi’s TurbSense® was chosen for this application because it meets the plant’s requirements for accurate, durable, low-maintenance turbidity monitoring.

Pi has also supported other Coca-Cola facilities in China. In a Central China plant, Pi provided instrumentation to monitor peracetic acid levels on cold filling lines, and at a separate East China site, Pi’s analysers are used to monitor suspended solids in the wastewater treatment system.

Why Is Turbidity Monitoring Important in Beverage Water Treatment?

Turbidity measurement provides an indication of the clarity and particle content of water as it moves through treatment stages. In beverage manufacturing plants, raw water must meet defined quality criteria before it enters the process. Variations in turbidity can signal issues with source water, filtration systems or treatment performance, potentially affecting downstream processes and product quality.

The turbidity monitoring solution at the Coca-Cola plant involves a number of turbidity sensors, strategically placed at various points in the raw water line to provide operators with continuous data on water clarity. This real-time insight allows for faster responses to changes in water quality and supports optimisation of treatment processes.

What Makes TurbSense® Well Suited for Beverage Water Monitoring?

TurbSense® uses a solid-state optical sensor with no moving parts, which minimises wear and reduces maintenance requirements. This is particularly valuable in facilities that run long production cycles and cannot afford frequent instrument intervention. Its wide measurement range from 0.01 NTU to 1000 NTU, with a resolution of 0.001 NTU, allows the system to detect subtle changes in low-turbidity process water while still accommodating the higher levels sometimes seen in raw water streams. TurbSense® requires only a single-point calibration and contains no consumable reagents, meaning that it supports predictable operation and low cost of ownership.
