Process Instruments (Pi) have always championed the development of employees, allowing them to grow alongside the business and develop their skill set through internal and external training.

Pi Apprentice Joins the Technical Support Team

Process Instruments - BenPi’s latest employee to undertake such a development is apprentice Ben Turner.

Ben started working for Pi in October 2017 as an Electrical Engineering Apprentice in the Manufacturing department. Here, Ben was tasked with building Pi’s CRONOS® and CRIUS® instrument controllers with a selection of sensors measuring parameters, such as streaming current, chlorine dioxide, ORP and dissolved oxygen.

Now in the second year of his apprenticeship at Nelson and Colne College, Ben has been asked to join Pi’s Technical Support team, providing immediate assistance to customers, distributors and the sales team. As part of his new role, Ben has obtained his Safety Passport and is now able to visit sites to see the analysers and controllers he used to build, in operation.

Regarding his new role, Ben said:

“I was both surprised and excited to be considered for a role in the Technical Support team. Since the move, Pi has provided me with fantastic support, especially Wes and Jonathan who I now work alongside. This is a great opportunity for me to develop my current skills and gain new ones, and I now hope to progress to the Higher National Certificate to develop my ability to solve electrical engineering problems.”

Ben hopes to follow in the footsteps of his mentor and Applications Engineer, Wesley Ashworth, who also started his Pi career as an apprentice in October 2011. Like Ben, Wes initially worked in Manufacturing before progressing to the Technical Support team and completing his Higher National Certificate.

Here at Pi, we currently have seven apprentices who are studying in a range of areas, from electronics to accountancy. In the past, three employees have completed their apprenticeships and the Higher National Certificate. As well as attending training events, some of these employees have since provided training to customers worldwide.

Process Instruments (Pi) have been supporters of the Living Wage Foundation since 2016, but have now been officially accredited as a Living Wage Employer by the Living Wage Foundation.

Pi are proud to pay a living wage

Pi’s Living Wage commitment means that qualifying employees at Pi will receive a minimum hourly rate of £9; an amount significantly higher than the UK government minimum for over 25s, which currently stands at £7.83 per hour.

In Pi’s region of the UK, 23% of all jobs (634,000 jobs) pay less than the real Living Wage. The real Living Wage provides a voluntary benchmark for employers who wish to ensure their staff earn a wage they can live on, not just the government minimum. Since 2011, the Living Wage movement has delivered a pay rise to over 160,000 people.

When commenting on Pi’s Living Wage commitment, Managing Director Mike Riding said:

“We’re very proud to be accredited as an official Living Wage employer and have always been keen to ensure that our team earn enough to live on. Our company values include fairness, respect and integrity and we believe that all our team deserve fair pay for their hard work.”

Furthermore Tess Lanning, Director of the Living Wage Foundation, commented:

“We’re delighted that Process Instruments has joined the movement of over 4,700 responsible employers across the UK who voluntarily commit to go further than the government minimum to make sure all their staff earn enough to live on. They join thousands of small businesses, as well as household names such as IKEA, Heathrow Airport, Chelsea F.C., Everton F.C. and many more. These businesses recognise that paying the real Living Wage is the mark of a responsible employer.”

Julius Pi and Craig AllPronix at Anfield
Julius Guth from Pi (left) and Craig Bradshaw from AllPronix at Anfield

In February 2019, Pi welcomed Craig Bradshaw from AllPronix for a week of advanced product training at the head office in Burnley, UK. Craig is the product specialist for Pi equipment at AllPronix and is responsible for sales across South Africa.

The training week was very hands-on, providing Craig with practical experience in setting up the analysers and trying out different features. The training involved in-depth tutorials about the CRONOS® and CRIUS® analysers including communications, PID settings and remote access as well as sensor calibration procedures for the pHSense pH meter, ConductiSense conductivity meter, TurbSense® turbidity meter, SoliSense® suspended solids monitor and more.

Pi’s head office contact for South Africa, Julius Guth, spent the week training Craig with assistance from Wesley Ashworth and Ben Turner from Pi’s Technical Support team. But the week wasn’t all work; Craig also had plenty of fun trying his hand at Clay Pigeon Shooting at The Coniston Hotel and fulfilling his boyhood dream of watching Liverpool Football Club play at Anfield.

Julius said: “It was a pleasure to welcome Craig to our office and we had a great time together. Craig learnt a lot from the training, which will be invaluable when he is working with his customers back in South Africa. We have been partners with AllPronix for over 4 years now, so it’s always good to have a visit from them and provide assistance wherever we can.”

Process Instruments (Ireland) has recently supplied several multi-parameter analysers to Murphy Process Engineering Ltd. as part of a disinfection project in the Counties of Carlow, Wexford and Kilkenny.

Tim Harte from Process Instruments (Ireland) Ltd., and Applications Engineer Wesley Ashworth from Process Instruments (UK) Ltd., worked closely with Project Manager Sean Ryle to install the CRIUS® systems and manage the differences between the sites.

Pi’s CRIUS® multi-parameter controller is equipped with the capability to connect up to 4 sensors and measure different parameters including chlorine, pH, temperature and turbidity, and is able to connect to 3 more CRIUS® to accommodate more sensors if required.

The CRIUS® can output the parameters to a SCADA over Modbus or analogue 4-20mA signals and has the ability to send a flow proportional signal to control chemical dosing pumps including switching between duty and standby pumps.

Tim Harte said: “We’ve supplied instruments to Murphy Process Engineering Ltd. in the past including our auto-coagulation control system, CoagSense. It’s great to hear that the success of these installations meant that Murphy were happy to install our CRIUS® multi-parameter analysers across a number of their sites. Presently they are moving to the Commissioning phase on these installations. The CRIUS® is already set up for Water and Industry 4.0, meaning it is perfect for these types of project.”
